The Benefits of the ELSI System

Why the ELSI system is more than just a nurse call system and far more suitable than a CCTV system.

The first major benefit of the ELSI system is that the sensors (in the form of sensing laminates) are hidden under the floor surface.

This has two large positive results:

1. the person in the room is not being watched by video cameras, and their privacy and dignity is being preserved

2. the sensor is located in a place where it cannot easily be damaged or turned off or operated unnecessarily

The second major benefit is that the system is automatic which gives the following benefits:

1. It does not rely on the pressing of a button and is not reliant on the person having remembered to have worn a bracelet or necklace.

2. It does not rely on a person who has fallen being able to then operate a button

The third major benefit is that the system is proactive, meaning:

1. The nurse gets information before the event happens, for example the nurse gets information that the person has got out of bed and can then help the person before they have problems

2. The nurses can set the alarms based on the condition of the occupants of the rooms. For example one person might need help getting out of bed, another might not. The nurses can customise all of the alarms to suit the occupants.

A further benefit is that the data made available from the ELSI system can be used in the diagnosis of problems and analysis of mobility of the residents, and post-event analysis of the patient and nurses responses. In some cases the nurse has even realised that there is something wrong with a resident due to the change in frequency of the alarms.
